Belgian airspace remains closed at least until Monday 20:00 LT
Planes grounded as far as Ukraine; flights disrupted for at least 24 hours
The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation, CANSO, which represent air traffic controllers globally, says the knock-on effect of the volcanic ash plume over Northern Europe could disrupt European airspace for several days.
An Icelandic volcano, dormant for 200 years, has erupted, ripping a 1km-long fissure in a field of ice. The last volcanic eruption in the Eyjafjallajoekull area occurred in 1821.
The volcano , the fifth largest in Iceland, began to erupt just after midnight on March 2010, sending lava a hundred metres high.
Icelandic airspace has been closed, flights diverted and roads closed. The eruption was about 120km (75 miles) east of the capital, Reykjavik.
About 500 people were moved from the area
The Iceland volcano that erupted those days near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier is just one of over 40 active or extinct volcanoes in Iceland. The most recent eruption in Iceland before today's happened back in 2004, as the volcano near the Grímsvötn lakes erupted for about a week.
The dangerous thing about volcanoes in Iceland is if they occur under the glacier ice cap as it can lead to serious glacier melt and in turn flooding. Luckily it doesn't appear that the last night's volcano near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted below the glacier. Below is some very distant shots of the eruption.

As a result of the volcanic activity in Iceland and the ash cloud over Europe, Belgian airspace remains closed at least until Monday 20:00 LT. This means that all passengers air traffic to and from Brussels Airport remains suspended.

So my flight to Brussels is definitely cancelled and the conference as well...

By that time, you are likely to be free from being worried by that CLOUD
The complete closure of the European airspace could last longer yet...however I agree with you Belita, that one month it is enough long time to be sure, that the flying conditions appear safe... We'll see...nobody knows yet...
Have a beautiful Sunday as well... |

That was a terrible thing that happened when the Iceland Volcano erupted
Thank you dear Gloria... It is a very troublesome situation for many people, mainly all passengers which had been waiting many days at airports for the plane...Have a wonderful Sunday....

I hope that your plans are not seriously disrupted, Viera.
In view of the current transport standstill, the likelihood that the cause will persist for several days at least, and because the travel position will take weeks rather than days to return to normal, fortunately our conference in Brussels was postponed to the next month...However it was a big chaos...Have a beautiful Sunday....
